Memory marathon for Nick

A loving son will run the London Marathon in memory of his Scarborough parents, having lost them both to cancer.

Nick Bernard, who grew up in Scarborough, has lost both of his parents, who both spent their lives in Scarborough, to cancer in the past five years.

On Sunday April 24 he will run the London Marathon to raise money for Cancer Research and is appealing to the people of Scarborough who knew his parents, Ann and Bob Bernard, to sponsor him.

The 44-year-old, who now lives in York, decided he wanted to do something to raise money to battle cancer.

Nick said: “I have lost my mum and dad to cancer in the last five years so I decided to raise funds for Cancer Research.

“I go running occasionally but this is a challenge for me.”

Nick was 19 he ran the London Marathon and hopes to beat his time. He said: “I have done the London Marathon once before but it was 25 years ago when I was 19. I’m hoping to beat my time from 1991.”

This time he has a cause close to his family’s heart urging him on.

Growing up, his parents owned a guesthouse on Royal Avenue and the couple were well-known about the town.

Nick said: “They were both born and lived their lives in Scarborough and were both popular characters around the area.

“I’m hoping to reach out to their many friends to raise funds in their memories.”

Nick hopes the funds will go towards early diagnosis and treating cancers in the hope of saving lives.

“I’ve not trained as much as I would have liked to but I’m looking forward to it.”

He is appealing for friends and people who knew his parents to donate and sponsor him in the final lead up to the run in the hope of raising as much money as possible for the charity close to his heart.
