The children of Overdale Primary School, in Eastfield, were overjoyed when Lord Tariq Ahmad of Wimbledon paid a visit.
Pupils gathered at the gates to greet Lord Ahmad, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, who shook their hands and introduced himself to the excited youngsters.
After a talk by Lord Ahmad, the pupils, who are currently learning about maritime heritage, were able to present their work to the minister.
On a tour of the school, pupils shared class displays about maritime history in Scarborough which included art work, poetry and drama and the oldest pupils delivered a Powerpoint presentation in a short assembly.
The visit concluded with the whole school singing shanty songs that tell the stories of maritime history.
Headteacher Vicki Logan said: “The children of Overdale Primary School were excited by the prospect of a visit from Lord Ahmad.
“They have worked hard to agree questions for the minister and they are keen to hear him speak about his work.
“They valued the opportunity to share their learning about the maritime topic with specific reference to Scarborough.”
