Scarborough Amnesty group has organised a wide range of activities to mark International Women’s Day next month.

The local branch of the organisation is putting on an event at University of Hull Scarborough campus.

The programme includes a talk by Hugh Sandeman, Amnesty International UK’s Algeria and Libya co-ordinator. His lecture will be followed by questions.

There will also be a talk by the Human Rights Defenders from York University and music from Scarborough-based all-women singing and instrumental group Raven and music, too, from all-female singing group Global Voices.

“This will be a stimulating and enjoyable day,” said Mike Gordon, chairman of the local Amnesty group.

“We start with a first-class speaker. I heard him talk in York recently.

“And there is wonderful music from Raven and Global Voices and readings by members of the Scarborough Poetry Society. We are also privileged to have contributions from three female human rights defenders.

“There is no charge for the day and we hope we will get lots of support.

“This is an important cause so please come and join us,” he said.

International Women’s Day is on March 8. The Scarborough event is on Saturday March 9. It runs from 10.30m to 3.45pm.

There will be a creche available.
