A new leader has been voted in at a meeting of Scarborough Council this afternoon.

Conservative Derek Bastiman, who represents Scalby, Hackness and Staintondale ward, will be leader for the next four years.

He defeated Labour leader Cllr Steve Siddons by 30 votes to 17 and takes over from outgoing leader Cllr Tom Fox.

He said: “I’m absolutely delighted that the overwhelming majority of councillors had confidence in me.

“I feel I have a proven track record and have served under Tom as his deputy.

“We want to carry on and progress the work we have been carrying out for the last four years and retain Scarborough’s place as the number one coastal resort.

“I’m looking forward to getting down to work with the new cabinet.”
