BROADCASTER Selina Scott has taken charge as the president of May’s Malton Food Lovers Festival.
The event promotes local produce and the news follows her outspoken criticism of the dominance of the large supermarket groups.
She feels strongly about the subject and campaigns fiercely for local food and independent retailers – she is opposed to plans for a new superstore which is proposed for the market town.
Ms Scott, who lives close to Malton, officially opened November’s Malton Food Lovers’ Market, which will be repeated in March, and the festival is due to take place on May 19 and 20.
“The presentation of the stalls at the first market was of such quality I can only compliment the organisers and each of the producers for their remarkable effort,” she said.
She has led a bid to sign up high profile figures to oppose the supermarket plans for Malton and more than 50 leading public figures have signed an open letter as part of the campaign.
The Malton Food Lovers Festival was launched in 2009 and attracted more than 10,000 visitors last year.
There were special appearances from celebrity chefs including food writer and broadcaster Tom Parker Bowles.
