One of Scarborough’s best loved traditions is set to take place again on New Year’s Day.

The Scarborough Lions New Year’s Day dip in South Bay has been running for decades and has now been launched for January 1, 2016.

Posters have gone up and sponsor forms are now available from the Scarborough News office at Newchase Court, Eastfield; the Tourist Information Centre in Foreshore Road; the Crown Tavern pub at the corner of Scalby Road and Falsgrave.

As usual, 75 per cent of the dippers’ sponsor money will go to their own chosen charity, with the remainder going to charities supported by Scarborough Lions.

Participants are encouraged to dress up and there will a prize for the best fancy dress, judged by Scarborough’s mayor Tom Fox.

On the day registration starts in the Rowing Club bar area. Changing facilities are available and fancy dress is optional.

Registration closes at 12.15pm and dippers will be asked to assemble on the beach area ready for the start.

Spectators are also reminded it is essential to there by 12.15pm, as the dippers cannot be held waiting in the cold for too long. The fancy dress will be judged at this point, approximately between 12.15pm and 12.30pm, then the participants will charge headlong into the chilly North Sea.
