Melanie Ann Green paid tribute to her “amazing, wonderful, weird” parents Joy and Derek Green, who were driving with the newlyweds from Leeds towards Scarborough when their Suzuki Ignis was hit head-on by a heavy goods vehicle.

The other couple, referred to by Ms Green as “Uncle Paul” and “his partner Sue”, were sitting in the back of the car when it was struck on the A64 near Scampston, between Malton and Scarborough, on Friday afternoon.

Ms Green posted on Facebook on Saturday: “Yesterday was the worst day of my life, yesterday I lost my mother Joy and my father Derek in a traffic accident outside of Rillington.

“They were coming back from Leeds from my Uncle Paul’s wedding to his partner Sue when their car hit a HGV coming in the opposite direction. Sue and Paul were in the back, all 4 of them died on the scene.”

Ms Green appealed for people to “respect our grief and our privacy” before adding: “In all honesty I feel like the world has just ended.”

All three emergency services attended the crash site and the road was closed in both directions while collision investigators examined the scene before it reopened early on Saturday.

The four passengers who died at the scene - two men aged 58 and 63 and two women aged 57 and 60 - have not yet been formally identified.

The driver of the lorry, a 26-year-old man, was uninjured, a North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said.
