Nostalgia: Advertisements at bottom of Bland's Cliff

This newsagents shop at the bottom of Bland's Cliff has a number of advertisements on its walls, two of which advertise two of Scarborough's major attractions of the time.

The wording on the smaller sign reads: “Promenade Pier North Side, Grand Entertainments on the Sea in the new Pavilion, 2d admission to the Pier, The only sea promenade in Scarborough, DON’T MISS IT”.

The second advertisement reads: “People’s Palace Aquarium, the most magnificent underground palace in the world, Acrobats, Gymnasts, Bicyclists, Vocalists, Instrumentalists, Fountains, Fish Tanks, Seal Pond, 11 hours continuous programme, All for 6d”.

The pier was swept way in a violent storm in January 1905. The People’s Palace Aquarium became known as Gala Land and closed its doors in 1966.
