JUNIOR REPORT: Spotlight shines on under-10s star Joseph

This Sunday will be a very busy one for the club, with a large number of teams from around Yorkshire and beyond coming to play against our junior and mini sides.

Starting off, we’ll have additional players from Malton joining in with our under-sixes as they start training at 10.30am.

We’ll then be hosting teams from Whitby and Malton from under-sevens all the way through to under-12s as their final practice game before the Breakway Tours Minis festival next weekend.

Some of our juniors will also be involved in action on Sunday.

Our under-13s will be taking part in a round-robin tournament against York, Novoscotions and a touring side from Scotland.

Albeit a different format, events like these usually offer a slightly different dimension to playing fixtures and hopefully it will be one our youngest junior side enjoys.

Our under-14s and under-15s will be playing on Sunday against York as one of their final fixtures of the season.

All junior matches will be kicking off at 11am and fingers crossed they both play well too.

Our Active Youth trainer of the week was Joseph Curtis of our under-10s.

Joseph celebrated his 10th birthday by being the first team mascot.

Here’s what his coaches had to say about him:

“Joseph Curtis has been with the group that now play at under-10s level for a couple of years and has been on a steady and impressive improvement curve throughout that time,” a coach said.

“During training and on match-days he always shows the key elements of the RFU core values - teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship.

“He listens well and is attentive to coaching, asking for clarification when needed and then taking a full and active part in all drills and practices.

“This year particularly, Joseph’s commitment and bravery in the tackle has been very noticeable.

“Not one of the biggest members of the squad, he still has the ability to put his head down and drive at the opposition in what is now a quite complex game for relatively young players.

“He carries the ball well and with determination and is able to take whatever action is required on contact, be it driving through or setting up a ruck or maul.

“He’s easy to coach because he listens well, and on match days he does whatever is asked of him.

“If, as a club and as coaches our success criteria are to help children develop in the core values then with Joseph we’re doing a good job with a willing volunteer.

“He is a credit to them both and I hope we can all work together for many years to come. A team of Josephs would be one to watch, if confusing to coach.”

On Sunday of last week I was fortunate enough to watch our under-10s and under-11s in action as they took on sides from Sheffield and Bridlington.

The progression both these age-groups have made since the turn of the year has been phenomenal.

All credit must go to the respective coaches; Alex Sharp, David White, Kev Hope, Paul Tait and Nick Ingham for this.

All coaches mentioned have made a conscious effort to improve their own performance as coaches and their players are clearly reaping the benefits.

We’re delighted to see both sides peaking towards the end of the season and we’re looking forward to seeing them as junior sides when they reach that age.

Next week the club will be hosting it’s annual Breakaway Tours Minis festival which will be one of the last major events of the season.

Teams from all over the UK will be coming to Scarborough to play against teams in our minis section.

All of our younger sides will also have a presentation event in the near future too, before the season officially finishes on May 2.

During the presentations, awards will be awarded to our stars of the future and the event will offer our players and their parents a chance to reminisce about memorable moments from the season just gone.
