LEE DOUGLAS: We need to be at our best to beat Malton

We showed glimpses of our talent as a side in our big win against North Ribblesdale on Saturday.

There were some superb moments of solo brilliance in the second half that ensured we won very comfortably, but as a team we will definitely have to go up in levels if we are to test Malton & Norton on Saturday.

Malton are a very strong side and are up there in second place for a reason.

They’ll go into their play-off for promotion and I have no doubt that they’ll do well.

I’ve said it before in this column though, and I’ll say it again now, on our day we can beat anyone at this level if we play to our potential.

They are strong in most departments and they’ll go into the derby game full of confidence and with a hell of a lot to play for.

We know how to go about beating Malton, it’s just going out there and executing that plan.

There will be a fantastic atmosphere, as there always is in derby games at Malton, and hopefully it’ll be a good day weather wise so we can see an open, free-flowing game of rugby.

Looking back at our win on Saturday, I really didn’t see that second-half performance coming.

We were very lacklustre in the opening period, it was certainly a lethargic effort from the guys in the first half.

After half-time, a few individuals stepped up and grew in confidence and we ended up blowing them away.

They really didn’t provide much of a threat to us.

In our away game at North Ribb’ they were very strong in the forward pack, on Saturday they had a few younger lads in there and it made life easier for us.

Having said that, we scored some fantastic tries.

Jordan Wakeham and Tom Chadwick both scored superb solo efforts and Graeme Jeffrey took his try really well too.

The performance of young James Leach up front was also promising.

The fitter Leachy gets, the more impact he has on a game.

He’s getting about the park a lot more now and having more of a say in the game, which is great.
