Letter: Town's support for poppy appeal is greatly appreciated

The Scarborough branch of the Royal British Legion has collected the magnificent sum of £75,300 through a variety of fundraising activities and the street and static point collections held during remembrance time.

The Poppy Appeal runs annually from October 1 to September 30, and this is the total that was collected as at September 30, 2016. This is a truly magnificent amount which demonstrates the high regard that the people of Scarborough have for our armed forces personnel.

This sum has been raised by a dedicated group of individuals together with the assistance of many other organisations, both charitable and private. However, the people of Scarborough continue to be most generous in their support of this worthwhile cause.

The Poppy Appeal is the major single source of revenue for the Royal British Legion’s Benevolent Fund. Each year more people come to the legion for help and the cost of that help is continually increasing. Too often we read in the press and see on the television the true cost paid by the young service men and women as they go about their duties in war zones around the world. It is only with your continued support that the aims of the Royal British Legion can be fully realised in terms of welfare support to the serving and ex-service community.

Finally, I would like to add my personal thanks to the people of Scarborough and district for their outstanding contribution to the Poppy Appeal, their support is greatly appreciated.

Beryl Anderson,

Poppy Appeal organiser,
