Nominations are being invited for the area’s top awards scheme for people and groups whose selfless efforts make a difference to their

The Borough’s Big Thank You Awards, now in their fourth year, are jointly run by Scarborough Council led by the mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, and The Scarborough News, Whitby Gazette and the Filey & Hunmanby Mercury.

Nominees and the nominators will be invited to the awards presentation night at Scarborough Spa on Thursday 11 April, 2013, where each nominee will receive a certificate, with awards presented for outstanding achievement in each category.

The awards recognise those who voluntarily work for the benefit of others and have made a significant difference to their area. We are looking for nominations across the age spectrum from children and young people to adults, as well as groups.

This year, a new category has been added – Nomination by Teachers – which gives schools and teachers the opportunity to put forward under-18s who have made a difference, either in school or in their communities.

Borough mayor Cllr Helen Mallory said: “We are eager to pay tribute to those inspiring young people right across the district whose selfless acts make such a difference to others.

“It’s why we have included the new category, so our schools can get behind the Borough’s Big Thank You.

“We also want to see our children and young people nominated in other categories, too – we know there are lots of parents, neighbours and community group leaders who see those youngsters making a difference every day and we would be delighted to hear from them. We want these awards to be representative of the spirit and eagerness to help others which is in evidence right across this borough.”

Ed Asquith, editorial director of Yorkshire Regional Newspapers, added: “We regularly feature stories about individuals and groups whose kindness, generosity, selflessness and dedication benefits others and we want to shine a light on good deeds.”
