During poor weather conditions, the East and West Pier extensions and the East Pier are closed by gates and chains.

A spokesperson for Whitby Coastguard Rescue Team said: "This is to ensure your safety. Please do not open or climb around the gates or chains in order to attempt to access the pier during rough weather conditions."

If you see anyone in trouble at sea or on the coast, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.
