Please watch out for plastic in brown bins

I'm lucky to have been able to walk my dog along the edge of a big arable field by my parents' house in Briggswath for the past 30 years.

I have enjoyed seeing the different crops growing through the varied seasons; seen struggles with drainage, wildlife taking good advantage of verges and hedges, and photographed the views across first golden barley, then brilliant rape.

Just now though I see a bit of a blight. I see the farmer has covered the field with a nutritious layer of compost which I guess has been produced by the council from the garden waste bins. So far so good.

It’s great that it is being produced and used. But the field and verges are littered with bits of plastic waste. I know it may not affect the growing crops and pollute the food produced, but it looks horrible. Now I am faced with litter picking along the fields when I walk the dog, as well as when we walk on the beach, through our parks, along our streets and in the woods.

Can I put out a plea to gardeners using the brown bins to pick out bags and plant tags, pots and packaging when they put the green waste in the bin.

The heat treatment just shrivels it a bit, and there are no little elves at the depot able to magic them away and you will end up with it in with your frozen peas etc as well as littering the fields and hedgerows in the countryside if we are not more careful.

Thanks for listening.
