TOMASZ CHADWICK: Ready to welcome over 60 teams for festival

After months of background work and a week of intensive preparation, Scarborough RUFC is ready to host what we hope will be another successful Breakaway Tours minis festival this weekend.

With close to 60 teams competing from under-sevens to under-10s, and well over 1,000 people in attendance, this festival truly may well be the pinnacle for our minis this season.

The tournament itself attracts teams from all over the United Kingdom and while our players are in the thick of the action playing a large number of matches, in between fixtures they’re able to take advantage of the other entertainment available, including a giant bouncy castle and slide as well as Laser Quest.

The prestigious nature of this event means that a large number of teams – even though they are still very young, are able to play to a very high standard of rugby.

Last year our teams were faced with stiff opposition in a large number of our age groups, but each team did remarkably well considering the level of competition.

Our under-nines beat the eventual winners, and two teams from our under-sevens made it through to their age group’s final.

In a great sporting gesture though the teams decided to not play the final against each other, and split the trophy so they could all enjoy the celebrations afterwards.

Hopefully we will see other great sporting moments this time around.

The weekend itself will be a brilliant event for the town and a fantastic way to showcase what this club can offer.

But I’d like to give a special mention to all of our volunteers that will be giving up their time over the weekend so that we can host such a large event.

The club itself is largely ran by volunteers, but to have so many more offer to help out over the coming weekend is truly a great thing to witness and my sincere thanks goes to every single one.

Moving forwards, this season has been an important one for his under-12s squad, as it is their final year playing in the minis category before they advance to the ranks of junior rugby.

This step will see a number of important changes, but different to last year where the team would need to increase to 15 players a side, new national rules dictate that sides now only have to play as a 13.

This takes a little pressure off in recruitment and retention of players, and allows the advancement into junior rugby to be an opportunity that both the players and coaches can look forward to.

Although the season is coming to a close, there is still time to come along to the club to start playing and training with our under-12s.

In many cases, this is the first year that children get exposed to rugby at school and coming along to the club on a Sunday morning to train with the squad really advances a player’s understanding of the game.

We are a very friendly club and welcome any new players with open arms, irrespective of experience.

We hope that with the combination of playing the game at secondary school, and the fantastic facilities the club has to offer, we will see a continuing trend in new players turning up to play.

I hope that next week I’ll be able to report to you about a successful weekend for all of our age-groups and that once again Scarborough RUFC was able to showcase the town in a fantastic light.
