Outdoor bid for nursery

A SCARBOROUGH nursery is hoping to double the amount of children who are allowed to play in its back garden.

Little Footsteps Nursery, in Columbus Ravine, has submitted an application to vary the condition and the matter is due to be decided by Scarborough Council’s planning and development committee on Thursday.

Currently the nursery is limited to a maximum of six children enjoying outdoor play at any one time unless bosses get written permission from the council.

But now the application is seeking to allow up to 12 children between 10am and noon, up to 12 children between 2pm and 3.30pm, and up to six children between 4.45pm and 5.30pm.

The nursery, like many others in the area, was recently awarded a Government grant to refurbish the outdoor classroom.

The lower garden area was resurfaced with astro-turf and play equipment – including a climbing frame, gravel pit, sand pit, a swing, a trampoline and easel – was installed.

And the upper area, which is designed for physical activities including foam ball games and the use of tricycles, was resurfaced using rubber safety matting.

Planning officers have recommended that permission be granted subject to a number of conditions.
