Women’s Royal Naval Service veterans and Royal Navy personnel gathered on Sunday to commemorate the 80th anniversary of a sea tragedy which claimed the lives of 12 Scarborough-based “Wrens”.

On August 19 1941, 21 Wrens including 12 based in Scarborough died when the ship they were on, SS Aguila, was torpedoed by a U-boat.

A memorial service took place on Sunday afternoon on Vincent Pier at a memorial bench dedicated to the Wrens, where veterans and service personnel paid their respects.
