The team at the Black Lion on North Street had to ring for an ambulance after a woman collapsed at the pub, and were told by the 999 operator to fetch a defibrillator while they waited for paramedics.

Landlord Barrie Creaser said he was shocked to learn there was no machine available at that time of night in the town centre.

The nearest was at the Lifeboat Station on Foreshore Road.

Barrie rushed to fetch it and fortunately the woman came round before he needed to use it, but he is determined to make sure there is a closer machine should there be a next time.

"I was quite shocked that the nearest one was at the lifeboat station,” he said.

“At the time, we didn't know what was wrong. I just knew I had to get there and back.

“It took about 12 to 15 minutes. That is critical time when a defibrillator could be being used.”

He understands there are other kits in the town centre but that they are in buildings which are locked at night.

He and his wife Ellie, along with other staff and regulars, have launched a fund raising campaign to pay for a defibrillator outside the pub.

The device would be locked but could be opened with a code available from 999 operators and could be moved to wherever it was needed in the town centre.

The one they are considering costs £2,500.

"There are cheaper ones available but we chose this one because it talks to you and tells you what you have to do,” explained Barrie.

As well as having collection tubs on the bar, Barrie and four others will be taking on a 182-mile sponsored walk in September.

They are asking children to design T-shirts for them to walk in.

There will also be a coffee morning with a raffle from 10am until noon on May 2 and an Easter draw. Anyone who can help with prizes should contact the pub.
