When Jessica Rowell, 24, visited Whitby recently, the last thing on her mind was that she’d be leaving with a fiancé.

Boyfriend Sam Race, 31, said he had originally intended to pop the question on Goth Weekend, but when that was cancelled he decided to wait until lockdown was lifted to ask for Jessica’s hand in marriage.

Sam, from Bishop Auckland said: “ I was going to set the camera up on a bench when a lady offered to take the picture, so I told Jess to stand by the whale bones and said to the lady “Just letting you know I’m about to propose”

“She was worried the pictures might not turn out alright so I shared them on a Whitby Facebook page so she could see they turned out okay.”

Sam has been coming to Whitby for holiday ever since he was young and he’s always loved the town, which is why he chose it as the perfect place to propose to Jess.

He said: “It’s where we had our first date and I knew that was where I wanted to ask her.

“Thankfully she said yes.”

The couple are planning to get married in a couple of years time, and the venue – it’s Whitby, of course!
