The new community fridge will hand out food donated by supermarkets and other businesses that they can not legally sell but is still safe to eat.

Anybody can take food from the fridge. Unlike food banks, no referral is needed.

The project is being supported by Coast and Vale Community Action’s Totally Socially campaign.

It aims to reduce food waste and bring the community together by sharing food out.

The last 12 months have seen community fridges springing up all over the area, including in Filey, Hunmanby as well as Malton and Norton.

There are plans to open more fridges in Pickering and Whitby soon.
