Egton Show secretary Daphne Jackson said: "It was a really hard decision, but the only decision anyone could make right now.

"We left it as late as we dare.

"It costs in excess of £60,000 to put the show on, now that's not a problem if you're going to have a good day."

Daphne said that trying to hold the show and encourage 8,000 people to observe social distancing was simply beyond the realms of possibility.

She said the committee plan for the show to return in 2021.

"We'll use the time to make improvements and do things that we've put off doing for a number of years," she said,

This year's show would have taken place on August 26.
