'I am absolutely astounded': Scarborough community champion Liz Blades is made an MBE in New Year Honours List

Liz Blades, who has dedicated countless hours to a host of local causes, is among those chosen as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List.

Her community work includes being treasurer of Scarborough Sea Cadets for 30 years and being on the committee of the Fishermen and Firemen Charity Fund for over 20 years.

“I can’t believe it, it’s still not sunk in,” said Liz.

“It was such a surprise and so unexpected. I’m absolutely astounded.”

Liz, who founded and ran BL Car Parts Centre in South Cliff with her husband Bill before they both retired, began collecting for the Fishermen and Firemen Charity Fund when she was just 18.

She joined the committee more than two decades ago and has been its secretary for 15 years.

She also volunteers for Friends of Dean Road and Manor Road Cemetery and Castle Ward Tenants and Residents Association, helping with gardening for both groups.
