Morrisons staff to take part in charity walk from Whitby to Scarborough
A group of colleagues from Morrisons stores across our region are set to take on a 21.5 mile charity walk this summer.
On July 14, over 40 staff members, including 14 from the Scarborough store are planning to walk along the cinder track from Whitby to Scarborough to raise money for one of the supermarket's charity partners.
Since January 2017, Morrisons has partnered with Young Lives Vs Cancer, formerly known as CLIC Sargent, the UK's biggest children and young people's cancer charity.
The partnership was supposed to finish in 2020 but was extended by one more year due to its success, having raised over £15 million company-wide so far.
Ellie Waite, community champion for Morrisons Scarborough, said: "We want to do something special to celebrate the partnership that has meant so much to so many of our colleagues, and we wanted to push ourselves and get out of our comfort zones.
"Whatever our event raises, Morrisons will match the funds."
The money raised by the walk will go towards building 'Jack's House', a new Home from Home in Manchester being created by Young Lives Vs Cancer that will provide free accommodation for young cancer patients and their families during their treatment at the nearby Christie hospital.
Ellie explained that the group will set off from Whitby at 8am with a support vehicle following along and meeting them at various points to provide provisions.
They will walk to the end of the cinder track in Scarborough and hope to continue on to the Morrisons store in Eastfield depending on timings.
There will also be donation buckets on tills in stores and a tombola in the Scarborough store in the week leading up to the walk.
Young Lives vs Cancer Homes from Home are close to hospitals and provide somewhere for families to stay during treatment for free which reduces the financial cost and emotional impact of cancer and keeps families together when it matters most.
