Last February, a group of town volunteers got together to develop the community-based facility.

The idea was to collect good, eatable food that would otherwise go into land fill as waste.

Following donations of fridges, freezers and other equipment, the group now operates at Ingsgarth Community Centre on Pike Road on Wednesday and Friday mornings between 10am and 1pm.

The group is now about to trial a Monday session between 5.30pm and 7.30pm.

A spokesman said: “Food from local supermarkets, cafe and shops that is past its sell by date, but not it’s eat by date, is collected and brought to the centre for distribution to anyone who cares to come along.

“Fresh fruit and vegetables from allotment holders have also been donated.

“There are no restrictions on who can call in.

“Everybody is welcome – all they need is a carrier bag and a face mask.

“More volunteers are always welcome. Just visit our Facebook page or call 07340 387826 for more details.”
