“It’s definitely not got any easier,” said Natalie. “It’s not normal, I hate this build-up to a year, if it has to be a year I just want to fast forward to after.

“We’re going to relive that day again that it happened.

“I wish I’d got more out of him when I saw him. It’s total torture, until we know where and how Pete is we can’t deal with it.”

Pete’s son Jayden, 18, explained he was scared of spending another year of milestones such as birthdays and Christmas without his dad.

He is also worried that during the pandemic the public may forget about Pete.

Jayden said: “There’s a fear the issues with my dad are going to get forgotten about.”

Natalie has been encouraging Jayden and his younger sister Gracie,15, to write down the events of their year so they can remember the details to tell Pete when he returns.

Pete’s appearance is likely to have changed but he has certain distinguishing features such as a cancer sign tattoo on his right wrist, his 6ft 1in height, size 13 feet and a slight hunch when he walks, which will have stayed the same.

His family are appealing for people to keep their eyes open for Pete when they are taking their daily exercise.

“In his illness he will be a bit of a hermit but he’s a gentle man whether he’s poorly or well.

“No-one need be scared to go up to him if they see him.”

The pandemic has meant several of the activities the family were doing to try to find Pete have had to be put on hold.

However, Natalie has been speaking with several local authorities who are temporarily housing homeless people during the outbreak in case Pete shows up.

Jayden, whose A Levels have been cancelled, is planning to attend Durham University in September to read Philosophy, Politics and Economics He longs for his dad to be found in time to see him start this next, important step in his life.
