Group member, Alistair Lawrence said: “For years there has been a Roller Derby group, but numbers dwindled due to the slightly aggressive nature of the sport, so the session turned into a social skate where you can hone your skills or learn new ones.”

Organiser, Lucy McPartlan, who works as a ward clerk at Scarborough Hospital, said beginners are welcome: “It’s quite informal and there are plenty there to teach. It’s a good cardio workout, and better for the joints than running.

“We have a few skates we can lend people if they don’t have their own.

“It’s all about fun and new friendships, and of course, we always go for a drink afterwards.”

Roller skating takes place at the YMCA every Friday from 8-10pm. To find out more contact Lucy on [email protected].
