The Scalby School community have come together to produce a recipe book that includes a wide range of recipe ideas, including the schools' very own top secret flapjack recipe.

The book 'Food Stories' was inspired by the campaign for better funding for free school meals by high profile celebrities such as Marcus Rashford, Jack Monroe and Emma Thompson.

English teacher, Emily Vickers said: "At Scalby School, nearly a quarter of our students qualify for the free school meals funding. Lots of our families are finding things a bit tighter financially, due to the pandemic.

"We wanted to do something to keep the community spirit going during these difficult times.

"Our students are really enthusiastic and always want to get involved, they are so generous and giving, they just need to be given the right opportunities."

The project was given to the students just before Christmas. They were encouraged to go home and discuss recipes with their families and then submit their favourite.

Ms Vickers said: "There are recipes from students, teachers, assistant teachers, lunchtime staff, as well as recipes from the wider community – including some local restaurants. There is even a recipe from a Michelin starred chef! It has also been a lovely opportunity to share some family history too, with many people including old family recipes.

"We are hoping to offer a free copy of the book to our students who qualify for the free school meals funding and have contributed to the book. We are also planning to help them with the cost of ingredients."

The book costs £5. All the proceeds of this book will go to the Gallows Close Community Centre who do some incredible work supporting vulnerable families and young people in our community every day. If you would like to buy a copy of the book, contact admin@scalbyschool.org.uk to place an order.
