Seagull cliff rescue in Whitby

Teams from Whitby and Staithes coastguard rescue were called to assist in an unusual cliff rescue yesterday.

A seagull was caught by its beak on a fishing line that had become attached to the cliff.

The coastguard was alerted to initial reports that members of the public had been putting themselves at risk trying to rescue the bird.

Whitby who were first on the scene had been tasked to an incident elsewhere which is when colleagues from Staithes were called in to assist.

A Rope rescue technician managed to free the seagull which was handed to the RSPCA and a woman from Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary for treatment.
