'She was the best': Family's tribute to Scarborough mum Emma Attree, who lost her fight with cancer at the age of 46

Emma Attree was 46 when she lost her final fight against the cruel disease at the end of last month.

One of her five children, daughter Lucy Smith, said: “She was the most loving, caring and bubbly person.

“She was all for everyone else before herself, she looked after everybody.

“She was the best."

Miss Attree - who had four daughters and a son, as well as three grandchildren - was diagnosed with cervical cancer when she was 31.

She had to undergo gruelling radiotherapy and chemotherapy to rid her body of the disease.

Ten years later, she received the news that the cancer had returned - this time in the soft tissue of her back.

She was given two months to live, unless she had surgery.

Doctors removed the tumour and Miss Attree’s coccyx but Lucy said her mum never fully recovered.

“Mum was constantly in agony with her back. She was in and out of hospital,” she said.

Despite a catalogue of tests, Lucy said no-one could explain her mother’s pain.

Eventually an MRI scan in January found a regrowth of the cancer in the soft tissue of Miss Attree’s spine.

She and her family were told the cancer had spread to one side of her lungs, and her condition was terminal.

She died at home on February 27.

"We want to get mum's story out there and give her the best send off,” said Lucy.

"We'd also like to put a bench up at North Bay because she loved it up there. The air and the sea eased her and helped her sleep."
