Holocaust Memorial Day remembers those who suffered under Nazi persecution, and in subsequent genocides. This year is the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and the 25th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.

In the run up to the day, Pickering library is showcasing a webcast on January 24, organised by the Holocaust Educational Trust, by concentration camp survivor Susan Pollack MBE.

Susan experienced the growing persecution of the Jews, which culminated in the arrest and disappearance of her father in March 1944. Shortly after, she and many family members were deported to Auschwitz where her mother was murdered. Susan then survived a death march to Bergen-Belsen from where she was liberated by the British Army in April 1945.

From January 20 to 28 there will be displays of posters, educational materials, leaflets and books at libraries in Northallerton, Richmond, Catterick, Great Ayton, Stokesley, Selby, Sherburn, Tadcaster, Barlby, Easingwold and the Supermobile library.

North Yorkshire County Councillor Greg White, Executive Member for Libraries, said: “For many years our libraries have been inviting the community to come together to mark Holocaust Memorial Day and this year is no different. It is essential to share the stories of those who suffered persecution, and most importantly to make sure the lessons of the past are never forgotten.”

The webcast will begin at 10am and there will be an opportunity for discussion and reflection once it is finished.
