When should you take your Christmas tree and decorations down? Here is what tradition says
For the past month Christmas has been celebrated throughout the country.
However, all good things must come to an end and the festive season is now drawing to a close for another year.
If you’ve decked the halls and put up your Christmas tree, you may be wondering when you need to take them down by.
In Christianity the Epiphany, when the three wise men visited the baby Jesus, happened 12 days after Christmas, this takes place on January 6 and is seen as the end of the Christmas period.
According to tradition it is unlucky to leave your up after the twelfth night which is why people generally take their decorations down in time for January 6.
But it has not always been this way, the Victorians were known to keep their decorations up for over a month after Christmas, until Candlemas on Feb 2.
This holy day in the Christian faith celebrates when Jesus was presented at the temple – and was seen as the end of the festive period in the 19th century.
So in 2020 the best time to take down your Christmas decorations would be the weekend of January 4 and January 5.
