Whitby Coastguard Rescue Officer celebrates 30 years with the service

He was introduced to HM Coastguard by his grandfather Jo Marson, who himself served with the Coastguard for 42 years.

Rob, 47, of Waterstead Crescent, Whitby, said many people don’t realise the scope of activity covered by the Coastguard. It includes not only water rescue, but cliff rescue, flood rescue and searches for the police.

A self-employed builder, Rob also works part time at Peregrine House doing buildings maintenance. He said the support he receives from them when he gets a callout is exceptional, as he is able to simply drop tools and go.

The most valuable backing he receives, however, comes from his family, he said: “I could not do this without the support of my wife and family. There have been many occasions where I’ve ran off and left them half way through shopping or in the middle of an anniversary dinner.”

Rob said that naturally there are some rescues he’d rather not talk about, but he does recall rescuing two young girls trapped on the beach a couple of years ago and being picked up along with them by the Coastguard rescue helicopter.

Station Officer William Cook said: "Rob has attended callouts at all hours of the day and night to help those in difficulty along our coast, this is a commitment which cannot be underestimated. Through his long service and dedication, Rob has become synonymous with the Coastguard in Whitby and is held in the highest regard.

“He continues to be a key member of the team thanks to his vast experience, unrivaled skills and knowledge both of the job and the area and I would like to congratulate Rob and thank him for his service so far. "

Senior Coastal Operations Officer, Steve Hart, said: “HM Coastguard would like to thank Rob for his 30 years service, dedication and commitment he has given and so far. His skills and professionalism along with a team effort have not gone unnoticed. A special thank you to the family for supporting Rob over the last 30 years.”
