Peter awardedinstitute's topbusiness prize

Scarborough scooped a double honour at the prestigious Yorkshire and North East Institute of Directors annual business awards in Leeds.

Peter Wilkinson was awarded the ceremony’s main accolade at the end of the evening – the Lifetime Achievement award.

He is a shareholder and non-executive director of award-winning engineering company Unison. “I am extremely proud to win the institute’s award,” he said.

“It makes a run of three awards in three years, with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Unison, The Scarborough News Business Person of the Year award, and now this from an extremely reputable institute.”

Peter worked for Pindar the print empire for nearly a quarter of a century, and joined Unison as a non-executive director in 2008.

He chairs the Scarborough Business Ambassadors group and, along with fellow director Unison engineering Alan Pickering, created Scarborough Engineering Week to inspire the choices of young people.

He is leading the creation in Scarborough of the University Technical College in collaboration with other businesses. “It will be an Academy of Engineering,” he said.

The 200 guests at the black-tie ceremony at the ornate Civic Hall heard the judges say, “People such Peter need to be and should be acknowledged.”

Terry Hodgkinson CBE, with bases in Wakefield and Whitby, is on the judging panel of the Scarborough News Business Awards 2016.

He was named Non-Executive Director of the Year at the Institute awards in Leeds for his role as board chairman in advancing the work of Newcastle-based further education charity NCFE.

“I’m proud to win this award, especially for the NCFE which inspires and encourages students and people in training and personal development across the country.”

He is a former chairman of Yorkshire Forward, with 40 years of experience of business, construction, conservation and charitable activities.
