The fire on Monday night, which started with a caravan and spread to several outbuildings, caused people living nearby to be asked to leave their homes.

Police say they suspect the blaze was started deliberately and are appealing for anyone who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area at the time, or anyone who has any other information that could help the investigation, to get in touch.

As reported by the Scarborough News, crews from Pickering, Kirkbymoorside and Malton were called to the fire on Southgate at 9.54pm on Monday.

They said the caravan fire had spread to a number of lean-to outbuildings with a car and cylinders inside.

Police shut the A170, put a cordon in place and evacuated several neighbouring homes while firefighters tackled the flames.

People were able to return to their homes and the A170 reopened by 2am.
