Scarborough Council is to place the totem boards at various locations around the town after securing planning permission today.

The council’s planning committee today granted approval for the signs which will be located at Scarborough Spa, by the harbour in Sandside, in front of the railway station in Westborough and in Burniston Road opposite Peasholm Park.

A report prepared for the committee stated that the scheme was part of a wider plan to replace a total 79 directional signs across the town which are now showing their age.

It added: “[The four signs] will have a digital screen integrated into one of the two sides of the sign to display adverts of what’s on in Scarborough.

“There are some existing map signs in the town, however these are out of date and in a poor condition. The new signage will be contemporary and modern, with new mapping and up to date content.

“The addition of the digital screen for advertisements on five of the monolith signs will help to promote local businesses and upcoming events in the area.”

The committee had concerns about the location of the totem proposed for Scarborough Spa and asked officers to look to see if a more suitable location on the site could be found.

The remaining standard street and information signs to be replaced cover an area stretching from the Sea Life Centre in the north down to the South Cliff Clock Tower.
