Cllr Steve Siddons is one of around 50 Labour council leaders to sign the statement urging members to support the shadow Brexit secretary to replace Jeremy Corbyn.

The letter states: “We are backing Keir because of his vision, values and integrity, and for his track record of giving a voice to the voiceless.

“As Labour leader he will end divisiveness, unite our movement, and provide real opposition to the government. And most crucially we are supporting him because we believe he is the candidate with the greatest chance of winning power for a purpose and becoming Labour’s next Prime Minister.”

Starmer is currently running for leader against Rebecca Long-Bailey, Lisa Nandy and Emily Thornberry.

The Scarborough and Whitby Constituency Labour Party (CLP) has nominated Starmer as its choice for leader following a vote at its most recent meeting.

The members also chose Richard Burgon as their nominee for the deputy leader role.

Neighbouring Thirsk and Malton CLP, which includes Filey, also backed Starmer but went for Angela Rayner in the deputy race.

The result of the leadership election will be announced on April 4.
