Profit-driven plans could exploit The Bay development site

Re Narrow approval for expansion of The Bay (The Scarborough News, October 11).

I understand that the seven committee members who voted against the development were those whose constituents would be most directly affected and those who supported it were those most geographically distant.

How well is local democracy served when our “representatives” vote against those who most directly reflect the views of the affected stakeholders?

What can possibly have induced the committee chairman to vote against those best placed to reflect the views of the local residents?

How can the committee chairman break a deadlocked view by voting against the local plan which the council commissioned and we all paid for?

This decision does not serve local “democracy” well.

I supported the initial development of The Bay as an innovative and appropriate way of breathing life back into the old Butlin’s site.

However, Vivendi will undermine the project by over-exploiting the site, driven by profit.
