Mary Portas swept into Scarborough and stole the show at Books by the Beach.
A capacity crowd of more than 500 packed the Concert Room at the library to see the ‘queen of shops’.
She had them in fits of laughter, and a few tears, as she talked about her book Shop Girl - an autobiography which details her childhood and teenage years - including the death of her mother,
A microphone malfunction left her fearing she was showing more than she should and she asked host Peter Guttridge, on several occasions, if “he was looking at her boobs’ as she adjusted her blouse.
A quick-thinking sound-man saved her blushes - but she did not hestiate to show her ‘Kinky Knickers’ when asked how her lingerie business was ‘holding up’.
To what she thought of Scarborough she said: “You have a beautiful town, it’s unique, never lose that.”
After the hour-session Mary spent another hour signing copies of her books and posing for photographs.
