A young Scarborough student and pleasure boat skipper has won a national photographic award for a picture taken on board the Regal Lady.

William Danby, 20, was presented with a prize of £250 during a prestigious awards ceremony on board the HMS Belfast in London, which was hosted by TV presenter Julia Bradbury.

He is now planning to spend his winnings on the preservation of the Regal Lady.

William said he was delighted to win the award and be able to raise the profile of the historic Dunkirk “Little Ship”.

His photograph, titled “Polishing the Brasses”, is a poignant image of a plaque being cleaned which simply reads “Dunkirk 1940”.

William, who is originally from Pickering, is studying for an art degree at Plymouth University and skippers the boat when he comes home.
