Rescuers set to be honoured for heroic efforts

LOCAL heroes will be rewarded for helping to keep the county safe for visitors in a glittering ceremony at the Raven Hall Hotel in Ravenscar, hosted by tourism chiefs.

Welcome to Yorkshire is supporting this year’s Search & Rescue Awards Ceremony in a bid to spotlight the vital work carried out by life-saving volunteers based in Yorkshire.

Chief executive Gary Verity said: “We are delighted to support this year’s Search and Rescue Award’s Ceremony to honour and to thank all of our life-saving volunteers.

“They are out in all conditions, providing an invaluable rescue service and we thank them for their tireless efforts in keeping our county safe.”

Scarborough businessman Tony Peers will be hosting the event on Friday which will see up to 50 volunteers and guests attend, with 20 awarded for going beyond the call of duty in incidents.

Five teams, including the Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team, from across the county will be in attendance, who between them responded to 163 incidents over 15 months - roughly one call every 48 hours.
