Road closed as police talk man down from roof

Saint Sepulchre Street in Scarborough’s Old Town was cordoned off late on Friday night after a man climbed on to a roof in a bid to evade police.

Officers were called to an address at 10.40pm regarding a suspected assault.

When they arrived at the scene a 30-year-old man climbed onto the roof of the premises and refused to come down.

Specially trained police negotiators, firefighters and paramedics were brought in to assist the officers, and the nearby area was cordoned off to ensure public safety.

The incident was brought to a safe conclusion at 12.46am when the man agreed to climb down from the roof.

He was arrested and taken into custody for questioning.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. It is unclear at this stage if anyone had been assaulted.
