A runner who won this year’s Scarborough Race for Life is pushing herself ten times further for her latest charity challenge.

Cathy Wood, 33, who finished the 5k race for Cancer Research first, is now preparing to run 50k after signing up for the Royal Parks Ultra Marathon.

Mrs Wood will be completing the gruelling distance having only taking up running as a hobby in recent years, and is using the challenge to fundraise for Scope.

She said; “I have chosen to run for Scope as they support families and people with disabilities and help to challenge perceptions of those with disability.

“In this Olympic and Paralympic year, this has inspired me, from watching paraplegics completing the torch relay, to those competing in the games. If these people can overcome life difficulties in such a positive manner, then I feel that they should be supported and encouraged, and see no reason why I cant complete the challenge of running 50km.”

The run, which covers the equivalent of 36 miles, starts from Hyde Park before covering three miles of closed roads, past famous sights such as Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament. Runners then follow the towpath as it winds towards South West London and the Richmond Park landscpae before crossing the finish line in Bushy Park.

Mrs Wood, who works at Dale Power Solutions in Eastfield, said: “I am really looking forward to the day, and have been enjoying my training, despite the great British weather.

“My dog Riley has been keeping me company on my shorter runs up to ten miles, which he loves, along with working out at Eze Fitness gym, playing netball and completing either a long run or bike ride each weekend.

“I am currently feeling fantastic and really excited and enthusiastic about the challenges I have ahead of me.”

Mrs Wood, who has been sponsored by the McCain Scarborough Ladies Netball League, is also appealing for gift donations for a raffle she is holding to boost her fundraising efforts.

The race is on October 7. To sponsor Mrs Wood visit
