The school has been consulting on the move since last year and is now taking the final steps in the process.

In a statement headteacher David Read said: "We are informing you that Scalby School has made an initial application to become an academy with a probable start date of June 1 2016.

"This would mean the school would be directly funded by central government and outside the control of the local authority, North Yorkshire County Council.

"Extra funding would come directly into the school as a result.

"Our desire to do this is rooted in the belief that a conversion to Academy status is in the best interests of our students.

"It will provide extra funding which will be reserved for staff development and learning resources for our students. We will also gain more autonomy over the curriculum we teach, thereby allowing teachers more scope to engage the students.

"The school will be the founding member of the Scalby Learning Trust in which we hope other local schools will join us so that we can collaborate closely in order to raise standards of achievement in the town. In the first instance, we are particularly keen to work with primary schools so that we can "learn from each other and improve the transition from primary to secondary school even further.

"We would want to assure you that we remain fully committed to our core values as a non-selective 11-16 school that serves its community.

"Staff pay and conditions will remain the same as will the school's name, crest and uniform."
