Former Raincliffe Comprehensive School and Scarborough Sixth Form College student, Gavin Williamson, has been awarded a CBE as part of the former Prime Minister’s resignation honours list for political and public service.
Born in Scarborough, Gavin was a County Councillor in 2001 for the Seamer division of North Yorkshire County Council before moving to represent the Conservative seat of South Staffordshire, which he has done since 2010.
Gavin served as the Parliamentary Private Secretary to David Cameron for three years until his resignation following the EU Referendum.
He was then promoted to Chief Whip in Theresa May’s Cabinet reshuffle following her appointment as Prime Minister last month.
On learning of his honour Gavin commented: “I am extremely honoured and humbled to learn that I was to receive a CBE for political and public service. It was such a privilege to work so closely and serve as the former Prime Minister’s Parliamentary Private Secretary for three years
“To be Member of Parliament for South Staffordshire is honour enough but to have been made Chief Whip and have a CBE is certainly something I never would have thought would happen.
"It was such a wonderful surprise and I am extremely grateful to have been recognised.”
