School chef set to discover award fate

A cook at a Scarborough school is set to find out whether he has made it onto the final shortlist for a prestigious food and drink award.

Chris Marshall, caterer at Scalby School, is one of ten cooks competing in the Best Public Caterer category in the 2012 BBC Radio 4 Food and Drink awards.

In the nomination,he was lauded for sourcing 95 per cent of all ingredients from within North Yorkshire to ensure green miles are reduced from field to plate and good growth in the local economy.

Thousands of votes have been cast already from all over the country for the awards, and in total there are nine different categories.

The final shortlist will be revealed on The Food Programme on Radio 4 this Sunday, September 30.

Judges in the Food and Farming Awards include Angela Hartnett, Valentine Warner, Charles Campion and Victoria Moore, and the 12-strong panel met recently to debate, taste and drink their way through thousands of nominations and decided on this year’s finalists.
