Shoppers in Proudfoot supermarket at Newby were evacuated following a suspected fire at tea time last night (Friday March 28).

Firefighters attended the store, on Scalby Road, at shortly before 6pm after an electrical fault in a light fitting had generated heat which triggered the fire alarm.

Director Mark Proudfoot said: “It would have been busy but I can’t say how many shoppers were in at the time. The fire service were very rapid in their response and we really appreciate that.

“Our staff were very diligent in recognising there was something wrong and acting accordingly.”

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the store was checked with thermal imaging cameras to locate any further sources of danger and make it safe.

The store was declared safe after around 15 minutes and shoppers were allowed back in.
