SIMON SMITH: Selby victory shows strength in depth we have

The players were superb yet again in our 43-7 win against Selby on what was a hugely successful Ladies Day at Silver Royd.

England’s Zoe Aldcroft, who is a Scarborough girl, came down to the changing rooms before the game with one of her international teammates to present the lads with their special shirts.

I know the lads appreciated that gesture - Zoe is an incredibly grounded young lady and her achievements in playing for her country at the World Cup are a great inspiration to all our youngsters at the club.

A few of the lads from the Vikings came into the side and played well, which will give me something of a selection headache going forward.

That is what you want as a coach, and it’s the reason I am not overly surprised that we’ve had a successful start to the new season.

The strength in depth we have at the club is fantastic and I knew a lot of talented players had been in the Vikings last season.

Add to that the young lads coming through from the junior set-up and things are looking incredibly positive for us.

Young Jonty Holloway added to his tally for the season and put in another strong performance. He even moved to play at full-back after Phil Stewart had to come off injured.

Jack Anderson came up from the Vikings and had a good game on the wing, scoring a try, which is great for us.

Having said that, we have a very tough game at York this weekend, traditionally a place we don’t do very well at.

Scarborough have played York in Yorkshire One for many, many years now, and we tend to do better at home against them than away.

We go into the game full of confidence though, and if we play to our potential I know we will give them a good game.

There are one or two things we will be working on in training leading up to the game, we need to improve in a couple of areas and I’m sure that will come with time.

We may welcome back Phil Watson, Matty Young,Ben Martin and Harry Domett back for the York game, I need to see how they come through training this week first though.

Stewart misses out as he has to follow the concussion protocol and sit this game out.
