READERS have been getting in touch with the Evening News to share ideas about a memorial to Sir Jimmy Savile.
Members of the public were invited to give their input to how a statue of the star on Scarborough seafront should look.
Suggestions are also being sought on what an area of land diagonally opposite his Wessex Court apartment in Esplanade should be named.
Many readers have written in to say they think the land should be called “Savile Row”.
Others have given their own take on the form the statue should take.
Shirley Foster said: “I think a fitting tribute to Sir Jimmy would be a wishing well situated on the seafront where the tourists could throw their coins in and make a wish.
“After all in life he made so many peoples wishes come true especially with the TV programme Jim’ll Fix It.
“He also raised a lot of money for needy causes and this would continue in death.”
Another reader said: “Either sitting with Freddie on Marine Drive, or better sitting on his own seat on the Esplanade giving ‘thumbs up’ to his favourite view.”
One person suggested that the statue should take the form of Sir Jim’s famous chair, so people can sit in it and have their photos taken.
They added: “Possibly with a statue of himself standing next to it, life size.”
The ideas are being collated by members of the Scarborough Sir Jimmy Savile Memorial Group, who have launched a £50,000 appeal for a permanent memorial in the town. All suggestions will be considered.
