Spielberg artist moves goalposts for new book

A SCARBOROUGH artist has produced a book about Middlesbrough Football Club, recreating some iconic scenes from the club's past.

Richard Piers Rayner, has written and illustrated Middlesbrough FC The Unseen History which is now available in the shops.

Mr Rayner, 55, is the artist in residence at the North East club and creates drawings for the club's programme, Red Square.

He said: "The Unseen History includes pictures that I recreated from decades ago.

"They go as far back as Linthorpe Road, which was Boro's first ground.

"There is no recorded pictures of the first-ever goal scored there, so, using descriptions of the ground, I have produced a collection of drawings including the first ever goal scored there.

"They are lost pictures and I really enjoyed recreating the scenes."

Mr Rayner is well known for his illustrations in the book, Road To Perdition, which was made into a famous film starring Tom Hanks.

His name is mentioned in the official production notes which were sent to film critics around the world.

He said: "We made the book in 1996 and it was seen by Steven Spielberg.

"He loved it and it was later made into the film which was released in 2002. It was fantastic."

Middlesbrough FC The Unseen History includes 200 illustrations and Mr Rayner said it would not just be of interest to Middlesbrough fans.

He said: "The history of one club is the history of all clubs so it will be interesting for all football fans.

"The book basically looks back over the years and includes scenes which were never caught on camera."

The book is published by Breedon Books and costs 16.99. It is available at most book shops.

The Evening News has a signed copy of the book to give away to one lucky reader.
