Can we fix it – that was the cry of company director Mark Scott who was having trouble recruiting apprentices into the construction industry.
The answer was yes we can – with the help of singer-song writer Terri-Ann Prendergast originally from Cayton.
Mark, director of Futureworks (Yorkshire) met her at a Prince’s Trust ceremony, was impressed with her work and asked her to write a song about the industry.
The result is Building Your Future complete with music video. “I did not know anything about construction but did some research,” said Terri-Ann who now lives in Wakefield with her partner Matthew McDonald.
“I came at it from the point of view of young people about to leave school and not knowing what to do with their lives.
“The message is no matter what you want to do there is an option for you. Companies like Futureworks are there to help,” said Terri-Ann who set up her performance business with the help of the Prince’s Trust.
“I feel like it will speak to young people who are feeling confused about their future, and hopefully it will spread a new feeling of hope and excitement at these new prospects.”
Mark, whose company recruits across Yorkshire, said: “The image of construction to young people is that of a bricklayer or carpenter and is very male orientated. That it’s dirty, long hours and poor pay – all the things it isn’t.
“There have been many attempts to change mind-sets about the industry but none like this song and video.
“We hope to present to young people the types of images that they can relate to and be inspired by.”
